On 10 September 2025, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her State of the EU address
This is the first State of the European Union (SOTEU) address in the new term of the European Commission. For Ursula von der Leyen, who has been President of the EC since 2019, this is one of a series of annual speeches. During these speeches, the head of the EC summarises the achievements to date before the European Parliament and outlines plans for the coming 12 months.
‘It is time for European independence. I believe that it is the mission of the European Union to be able to take care of its own security. To take control of the technologies and energy that power our economies. To decide what kind of democracy and what kind of society we want to live in,’ von der Leyen said during her speech on Wednesday.
The key elements of the European Commission President's speech for energy and climate goals came later. However, they resonated significantly. The EU intends to take a two-pronged, or even three-pronged, approach. It will remain on the ‘green’ path, but at the same time it will defend its companies, and the transition is to be fair. In other words, it should have as little impact on citizens' wallets as possible.
‘Low-carbon energy sources account for over 70% of electricity in the European Union. We are global leaders in patents related to clean technologies, competing with China. When it comes to venture capital, we are catching up with the US,’ von der Leyen said.
